Mafia Day 2

The night might have been quiet, but it was not.
Henry, the telepathic ninja owl was practicing his dance skills very loudly. He was displeased at having lost a dance battle to a puppy.
Meanwhile, somebody in dark blue exited one house and entered another. The somebody took off her gloves and set them by the door, next to a briefcase that hadn't been opened recently. She hadn't needed the contents. 
There was a knock at the door. 
"Who is it?" the Somebody asked suspiciously.
"I'm terribly sorry to bother you, but would you mind letting me in please?" asked Someone.
Somebody frowned. "Why do you want to come in?"
There was a little cough from outside. "Well... er... you see..." 
The door opened, and Somebody saw Someone's silhouette in the doorway, but couldn't discern their face. 
"I'm terribly sorry to burst in uninvited like this," said Someone. "However, I'm afraid I need to kill you." 
"Um. I am absolutely not okay with that," said Somebody--said Star.
"See, I realize that, but it's just me now, and I need to kill everybody. You're somebody, therefore I need to kill you." Someone pulled out a small gun and shot twice. "Part of my job is making sure the Town people all die, and that includes you. I am deeply sorry for the inconvenience."
Star, Doctor, did not respond. She was ever-so-slightly dead.

Mafia 10 Night 2

The sun began to set, and the Town made a decision. While searching Noelle's house, they townsfolk found a will asking for a funeral pyre and leaving her cat to Trip Castellan. Trip went looking for the cat all over Noelle's house and the surrounding area. He decided the cat must have been spooked, and went  home to change into mourning clothes for the funeral and execution. He would try again in the evening. When he opened the door to his closet, something fuzzy shot out and rubbed against his ankles.

"How'd you get in there, little buddy?"

"Mrow."

The Town reassembled just after the sun had fully set beneath the horizon. The first order of business was the execution. The vote was unanimous, and Ember was lead to the gallows. She didn't even try to defend herself. There was no point in trying to convince anyone. She wouldn't be able to do it. There, was, however, an escape route she was still considering.

When the noose started to tighten, Ember disappeared. In her place was a small blue butterfly. Ha. They'd never be able to catch her now. She fluttered above the stunned townsfolk. She could go wherever she wanted to. She could--

HENRY THE TELEPATHIC NINJA OWL TO THE FRICKEN RESCUE MY DUDES

Henry grabbed the butterfly in his talons. What a lovely snack.

"Woof!" A little black and white puppy also wanted to eat the butterfly as a snack. Henry scowled. There wasn't enough to share. There was only one way to settle this.

A dance battle.

The puppy out-danced Henry quite convincingly, then ate Ember, Mafioso in one bite. He was a good boy.

The Town gathered around Noelle's funeral pyre in a garden by the lake. Noelle had been a good cop and a good friend to many. It was time to honor her memory. They stayed outside watching the fire burn as long as they dared before returning to their homes. The remaining mafia member would strike soon.

It is now the night phase!

Mafia 10 Day 1

(note-- for those of you who haven't played before, I use they/them pronouns for the mafia killers when writing these scenes for the sake of being vague regardless of what the mafia member's actual pronouns are)

The cop's intelligence mission into her target's house went quite well. She gathered fingerprint samples to compare to samples found on a Mafia gun, and she searched through the drawers and pulled out files that looked as though they might contain secret codes. After scanning each paper she thought might be noteworthy, she returned everything to exactly where she'd found it, not even a millimeter out of place. The target returned home before the cop could leave, but even that wasn't much of an issue--she simply slipped into the laundry room until her target had gone upstairs and then she exited the front door without making any loud or sudden noises. 

When she got home, she put the fingerprints into a scanner-analysis program and sat down to work on the possible-codes. 

There was a sound at the door. It was extremely quiet, but the cop was trained for that sort of thing. She stood and moved out of sight behind the door. 

Footsteps. Someone entered the workroom and went straight for the window. They pulled something out from a small bundle under their arm and moved it around the edge of the window. The cop moved so she was blocking the door and grabbed a knife from on top of a book case. The figure turned around and the cop lunged forward, grabbing the intruder and holding a knife to their neck.

"Tell me what you're doing here or you die."

"I'm afraid that's not how it works." The intruder managed to knock the cop's knife hand to the side long enough to twist free and shove the cop back into the desk. They had pulled a knife of their own out from somewhere, but the cop's blade was longer and she wasn't trying to hold a bundle under her other arm. She had the upper hand here. 

She managed to keep her balance. She managed not to drop the knife. "You're not coming anywhere near me." 

The intruder smiled. "Luckily, I don't need to." They dropped the bundle on the floor. 

There was the sound of glass shattering, but the cop couldn't see exactly what it was under the cloth bundle part. She rushed forward, knife ready....and almost ran straight into the door. It was a sturdy door, meant to protect her, not trap her. She tried to pull it open, but it was stuck fast. After about a minute, she stopped and collected herself. Okay, the door wasn't going to work. She started to go over to the window, but the realization hit her before she'd even gone two steps. The intruder had already taken care of the window. That was the first thing they'd done when they got there. The cop looked down at the bundle and the greenish smoke that now surrounded it. 

The shattering noise...

Vials of poison gas...

She was going to die.

The next morning, the townsfolk noticed that the wall of one of the houses was starting to break. Upon further investigation, they found that Noelle, Cop, had used her desk as a sort of battering ram to almost destroy her office wall before eventually succumbing to poison gas.

It is now day. You will receive an email or Snapchat saying what happened to you during the night phase and containing a short story describing it. Those stories are for fun--don't read inform details too closely and don't share them with other players in the game. Saying your role or what happened to you is fine, but copy-pasting emails from me is strictly forbidden.

Mafia 10-- HELL YEAH

Planned timeline:
I'm gonna have to start it a bit later than I'd planned. Roles will be sent out soon, and you will have until 6pm Pacific Time on December 25th to send in your night actions. The night will end early if everyone submits something, but the end of the day will still be sometime on December 28th (I'll put an exact time in the day post when we get there). I'm making the phases longer right now to make sure people with holiday plans can still participate. Also I will be offline most of the 27th.

--All kills (so if a vigilante and mafioso target each other during the same night, both will die)

A bit more complicated 9- person version
2 of the following: (could be more than one of the same kind)
NOTE: In this game, mafia members can both kill and do their other night action in the same night. However there is still only one kill per mafia
Mafioso-- Basic mafia that can only kill
Framer-- Can choose one player to frame as suspicious per night
Roleblocker-- Can choose one player and prevent them from doing their normal night action (will receive a failure notification if they target another Roleblocker of any alignment, but will not receive a failure notification if they target someone without a roleblockable ability such as citizen or twin)

6 of the following: (could be more than one of the same kind, but only one Cop and only one Doctor)
Cop-- Investigates one player per night phase. Finds Mafia suspicious and fellow Town members unsuspicious.
Doctor-- Picks one player to heal per night phase. That person is protected from being killed by the mafia
Citizen-- regular townsperson with no special powers
Roleblocker-- Can choose one player and prevent them from doing their normal night action (will receive a failure notification if they target another Roleblocker of any alignment, but will not receive a failure notification if they target someone without a roleblockable ability such as citizen or twin)
Busybody-- Can watch one person per night. Sees anyone who visits that person.
Twin-- Two town members who share a night chat and can confirm each other's identities as Town (there will always be exactly two if there are any). The twins' ability to talk to each other cannot be roleblocked.
Vigilante-- has one bullet they can use to shoot someone during the night. May not shoot night 1-----
1 of the following:
Amnesiac-- has the option to take the role of any dead player. Must fulfill that role's win conditions to win
Jester-- goal is to act like mafia and try to convince other players to eliminate them during the day. (Does not win if killed at night)
Executioner-- Receives a target at the beginning of the game. Goal is to convince others that player is Mafia and get them hanged during the day. If the target is killed at night, the executioner becomes a survivor with no vests but their role name is not changed/announced in any way. Target is selected randomly. 
Survivor-- Has two immunity vests, each good for one night's use. Will not be killed if attacked while wearing a vest. Goal is to make it until the end. Can win with any faction.

Mafia Revival?!

TO SIGN UP: Leave a comment with the name/pronouns you want me to use for you in this game. So for any of y'all who haven't played before, the game works as follows:
  • Once enough players have signed up, I assign roles using a random generator.
  • Once everyone has received their roles, they can submit their first night actions. I turn on comment moderation so actions can be commented without it being seen by anyone but me 
  • Blog authors have to use email because their comments don't require moderation. However, they can't see the comment moderation page without being admins.
  • If there is a two-person mafia, they will have a special blog where they can plot during the night. It will be closed during the day.
  • After everyone has submitted night actions, the day phase begins. Any deaths are revealed and all the players have a chance to talk and try to guess who is Mafia. They will also have the opportunity to vote players out and have them eliminated from the game. This is the town's chance to get back at the mafia, but be warned--voting out the wrong person could cost you the game!
  • The day and night cycles repeat until either all the Mafia are gone or until all the Town are gone. The Mafia also wins if they have equal or greater numbers to the Town and there is no possible way for the Town to regain majority.

5- person version:
Mafioso-- Kills one player per night phase
Normal Cop-- Investigates one player per night phase. Finds mafioso suspicious and other cops unsuspicious
Insane Cop-- Investigates one player per night phase. Finds mafioso suspicious and other cops unsuspicious
Paranoid Cop-- Investigates one player per night phase. Finds everyone suspicious
Naive Cop-- Investigates one player per night phase. Finds everyone unsuspicious.

I've recently learned that this version is usually played with a Night 0, where the cops investigate but no one is killed. However, since it tends to be easier for the Town to win than the Mafia, I'm not sure how much sense it makes to give them another advantage. I do like that everyone would get to participate Day 1 though. We could also play-test a version where there's no Night kill at first but then somebody has to be voted out the first day. If we end up with 5 people, I'll let y'all give input on that (before receiving roles)

(6-players is harder to balance the roles well but will probably be close to the 7-player version)

Simple 7- person version:
Mafioso (x2)-- They decide together on one player to kill per night phase
Cop-- Investigates one player per night phase. Finds Mafia suspicious and fellow Town members unsuspicious.
